Time to take stock of my social networking participation.

Twitter – Still updating on Twitter against all odds. Being able to monitor and update it via IM is really all it’s got going for it. I’ve had to start ignoring certain people though because the noise level got too high.

Pownce – I’m really not sure what to do with Pownce. It’s nice, but the lack of IM makes me lazy about it. I really like the reply-to-posts feature. I’ve started experimenting with uploading songs I’ve been listening to, which is fun but would be way more fun if everyone I knew had access to it.

MySpace – I still log in and add friends who request it and try to reply to messages in there. Spam has reduced from a few months ago so MySpace doesn’t bother me much anymore.

Facebook – Even though I only have around 70 friends on there and don’t whore it out like MySpace it’s rapidly becoming the most annoying social network. Check out what I’m met with when I log on:

facebook

Hey Facebook, I’ve got 1 leave me the fuck alone request for you. Oh and a fortune friend request.

Psh, you think those Facebook notifications are bad? Imagine you are in high school. The number multiplies by at least 12. It was a lot easier to manage pre-applications.

…but you can turn -off- those notifications in facebook!

Can’t you? I sure don’t get them any more after I did a mass-settings-tweak.

I can’t help but think that this is the fate of all “hot” social networking services. The noise level rises to the point where everyone tunes out. You’re better off if no one knows about your social network; the moment you get noticed by the NYT or Wired, your usefulness takes a nosedive as every company in the world starts using you as a spam delivery chute.

MySpace still drives me nuts since some people still use it in place of email. I once missed out on a potential gig because I turned notifications off and didn’t log in for a week.

I never really liked Facebook. It’s like one of those suburban gated communities where all the snobby teenagers are elitist and then they break out into that rebellious stage and become no better, if not worse, than the rest.

Bottom line: I think it’s totally cool you hate Facebook, I think I’m gonna blog about how much I hate Facebook as well.

I am more or less happy to report that I don’t use any of those services.

I finally joined Facebook after I got invitations from about 80% of the people I know. I regret it daily, not only because of the mass of notifications about everything anyone did with the damn thing, but because it emails me every time they do anything, too.

Eh, I agree facebook is kind of a pain in the ass now, but I used to really like it before applications. I’ve been using it for several years from the time it was only open to people with a .edu email address.

Slightly contrary to what I just said, I do use the “iLike” application often. It’s got a really cool feature where it scans your favorite music section and shows you all of your favorite bands that are touring and which have local shows with links to buy tickets. Going even further it also shows you which of your friends favorite bands are currently on tour. It will also let you know everyone that has marked a concert as either “I am going” or “I want to go” so you can meet people ahead of time to hang out with or hook up car pools with other people in your network.
