I’m looking to build a two (or three) shelved keyboard stand. Right now I have a keyboard on an X-stand that I often use as a table and I have a small 25 key keyboard that sits in a box because I have nowhere to put it.

Buying a dedicated keyboard stand is way more expensive than you’d think and as it’s not moving I don’t need to be lightweight and foldable. I thought the Internet would be full of DIY keyboard stands but so far I’ve only found two:

  • A Keyboard Stand on the Cheap – this one’s on the right track. I may just extend this out a bit for my purposes.
  • $5 Keyboard Stand – keyboard stand out of PVC pipe. I think I’d rather go wood for extra sturdiness and expandability.

Any others out there?

Maybe you could “repurpose” something already out there. My wife is a keyboard player and she’s got an 88 key model, with stand, but I was thinking of building one with some storage. We’ve got a long thin table we got from Target that’s the perfect size height and lengthwise and it looks good and has drawers. Google “hall table” and you’ll see lots of ideas.

I’ve been doing a lot of house projects, but I’ve been wanting to build a desk for mixing, with drawers for all my stuff and a drawer that will fit the mixer so it can be slid back. This kind of stuff can take a while so I always look for existing pieces that can be modded to work for what I want. (Nothing in this case though…) Sometimes though, you just want to build something, which I understand.

Good idea.

Right now the best idea I have is to get one of these:

And cut off about 10cm of depth. The keyboard tray might need to be lowered as well, hard to tell from the measurements and photos they give.

If you’re handy with tools you could probably build that with a sheet of plywood and have some left over. Lots of home centers sell sheets of ply or MDF (cheaper) in 2 feet by 4 feet dimensions. Get 4 of those and a circular saw and you could build that Ikea table and make it any dimension you want (up to 2ft.x 4ft. of course).

Here’s some links that might spur some ideas.

Just saw this in Bombay Trading the other day:

and loved it. I’ve been going over a modular music desk in my head, and this fits the bill. I’m going to make it myself though.
