Recently I finally got off my ass and wrote a thingmabob to track MP3 downloads. Here is the fallout:
China, you are cut off.
Seriously, I’ve never to my knowledge received a single nice email from anyone in China about my music or sold a CD, yet you guys make up like 60% of my bandwidth usage via sites like QQ and Baidu and Yahoo China Music.
I mean maybe if I felt like I was huge with this silent mass of Chinese I’d just roll with it, see where it takes me, but the fact of the matter is that every MP3 on my server gets hammered 24/7 by the same blocks of IPs, over and over again. Is it just their haywire search bots? Is it proxy requests from very shy Chinese Brad Sucks fans? I don’t know!
So for now you’re blocked, go sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done.

How bizarre. It reminds of when I worked for a stock photo company, and there was a huuuuuuge amount of bandwidth being accounter for by either a location in India or China, or both…like you, no sales ever took place in those locations. I think they were finally cutoff, eventually… Gotta wonder what’s going on…

Heh, last night I wrote a similar script to track plays and downloads, and this morning in the shower I was thinking “I should block those Baidu jerks.”
Did you block them at the server or is it just in your script?

I actually just put in some htaccess blocks for a whole bunch of them.
I’ve noticed it occasionally in the past because the site’s been sluggish and I notice my MP3s are getting hammered from China. I’m not suffering from it on a day to day basis and I have enough bandwidth, but it’s ridiculous the amount they’re hitting them.
I also had to put IP throttling on my /archives/ pages to deal with bots slamming my server, but as far as I can tell they’re not Chinese. Just dicks.

Yeah, I killed Baidu and QQ, too. I haven’t gotten much from Y!China. The best I could figure, it was their Flash streamer that’s completely dain bramaged.
The dumbest thing is that I’m still getting a bunch of error log entries – about two years after I blocked them.

Heh, it’s been awhile since I cleaned up my site’s traffic. I forgot how fun it is to block the hotlinkers who use graphics on my site for forum avatars and stuff.
Denied, suckas.
