Create Digital Music has a good Windows Vista resource: What’s Compatible for Musicians?
I have an irrational desire to upgrade to Vista. There are no real compelling reasons to and lots of good reasons to wait, but here I am all wanting it. No M-Audio drivers yet either, booooo.

Reason works, but that’s about all I know of for sure. You’re kind of out of luck if you’re waiting for drivers anyway.
Of greater concern is the extra CPU and memory overhead of it. If you’re not running a state-of-the-art PC already, you’ll want one for Vista.
Don’t buy the hype, man!

Also of concern is the built-in DRM nonsense.

Seriously, just wait until summer or fall for Microsoft to fix the bugs. Same with the iPhone. Too many features, something is going to crash.

I don’t think Microsoft is likely to be the source of delay — think third parties (as you found with M-Audio). There will be rational reasons to upgrade, however: better stability, better audio performance, less glitches. It’s just going to depend on more software availability. Stay tuned…
