I’ve made the pivotal career decision to stay home and play with my new broadband connection rather than go to Songposium. I was kind of interested in going, but I’m even more interested in playing video games online and drinking beer. I truly believe this will be an important weekend for my development as a songwriter nonetheless.
Thanks to everyone who offered up their comments on which of my tracks suck the least and also thanks to the crazy guy for his crazy rant from crazy land.

But, but…Rik Emmett! How could you say no to Rik Emmett?

Whew, I’m glad you’re not going. ‘Cause truthfully, I think all your songs suck. You would’ve been a meat-flavored popsicle walking amongst the dogs of hell.

^oh, that’s cold. but i would have pictured in my odd fantasy an ‘american idol’ type thing where some english guy who wrote the song comes up just to yell at you.

Brad’s just reaching out the the beer-drinking, video game-playing community, which is probably larger than the likes-songs-recorded-by-Pat-Benetar community. I don’t think there are enough songs written about the joys of broadband internet.

More thoughts, way after the fact, but hell wit’ it.
This is the way these things usually go: a mullet-headed panel of “experts” who’ve been out of touch with mainstream music for 20 years will take a listen to your song from a strict “hit single potential” angle. They’ll tell you one or more of the following:
a) get to the chorus sooner
b) you need a better hook! it’s all about hooks!
c) it’s too long for radio
Then they’ll send you home with enough self-doubt that you’ll be scrutinizing and overanalyzing the commerical potential of every creative thought you have for the next decade.
Eventually, you die anyway and none of it matters.
