I’m a couple of days late, but apparently Ring Tones Are Bringing in Big Bucks:

The worldwide sale of ring tones, which started as a marketing gimmick for music labels and mobile phone companies, is roughly equivalent to 10 percent of the $32.2 billion global music market.

That’s pretty crazy. I wonder if there’s a market for original ringtone compositions.

I just got a cell phone a couple of months ago and I just psychologically can’t bring myself to spend even a small amount of money on ringtones. And the phone seems to have no facility for importing or creating my own (I was briefly interested in the idea of creating ringtone versions of my own songs), so the whole ringtone phenomenon is kind of dead and bizarre to me.

There’s a site called http://www.euploader.com where you can upload your ringtones for download via WAP (that’s how they get installed). There are also two formats – SP-MIDI (for Nokia et al) and SMAF. Both can be generated from standard MIDI files via free utilities. The exact type of file you generate depends on what your phone can handle polyphony-wise.

It’s funny, because I’ve been thinking the exact same thing (making original ringtones).

Oh cool, that’d be fun. I wonder what my LG-TM520 uses.

If you have a sprintPCS phone it is extremely easy to host any files of the format your phone can play and DL them as ringtones. It only takes like an added 2 lines to the apache config and it can upload ringtones to sprint phones properly :).

I would love the option to download ringtones of Brad’s songs. I really need some new ringers and the ones I find suck.

I’d be willing to do a couple up if I could even come close to figuring out what the hell is involved.

My old phone allows you to compose and send your own ringtones, before there became a market for them and they stopped making them. Perhaps I’ll try and recreate some bradsucks songs on it, no idea how that will benefit anyone that isn’t me, I sure as hell aint sending ringtones halfway around the world.
